Elephant Trumpet

A trumpet is a wind instrument that is played in orchestras and marching bands. In the song, Making the Elephants Jump, the frightened elephants making loud noises that resemble the sounds of a trumpet. Elephants have long noses called trunks, which help them grab their food, take baths, scratch their backs and even make beautiful sounds. So enjoy making your Elephant Trumpet by following these simple instructions.

MATERIALS

  • Cardboard tube (from plastic or foil wrap)
  • Paintbrush
  • Poster paint
  • Modeling clay
  • Paper straw
  • White liquid glue and brush
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Colored construction paper
  • Felt-tipped pens

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Paint the cardboard tube with your favorite color poster paint and let it dry.

2. Place a thick layer of clay on the table. Push the end of the tube into the clay to cut out a circle.

3. Coat the inside of one end of the tube with white liquid glue. Place the clay circle inside the tube and allow the glue to dry.

4. Cut the straw in half. Squeeze one end until it's fairly flat.

5. Cut off the corners of the flattened end of the straw. This will be the mouthpiece.

6. Make a hole in the center of the clay using the pencil, and push the straw through the hole. Press the clay so that it is tight around the straw.

7. Cut designs from the colored construction paper and glue onto the tube to decorate your Elephant Trumpet. You might want to use the felt-tipped pens to draw jungle animals on the tube.

8. To make music with the Elephant Trumpet, hum into the straw.

9. Pretend you're an elephant jumping up and down and dancing around while playing your Elephant Trumpet.
